Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is genetic testing of five or six day old embryos conceived with IVF to avoid transmission of a serious inherited disease such as Cystic Fibrosis or Muscular Dystrophy to a child. With PGD, the embryologist removes cells from each embryo created in the IVF cycle that has grown to the blastocyst stage. The cells are sent to a molecular biology laboratory where they are tested for the abnormal gene causing the disease in question and the results sent back to our clinic. Given the time it takes to get the results, all the embryos that are tested are frozen before the results are available. The unaffected normal embryos are then transferred to the uterus in a different cycle after thawing. PGD requires IVF.
