Zika Virus is a virus carried by mosquitoes in Central and South America. There are reports that infection with the virus while pregnant or shortly before becoming pregnant can cause microcephaly in the developing baby. Microcephaly is the medical term for a small head, and the condition is associated with significant and sometimes fatal problems for the baby.
Unfortunately, little is known about specific risks, but the rate of microcephaly has increased over 20 times in Brazil in the last year, and some governments in affected countries have gone so far as to tell their population to avoid getting pregnant until more is known about the risks, or the mosquito problem can be contained.
We recommend that you visit the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) for updates on high-risk countries and travel recommendations.
If you are scheduled to travel to at-risk countries and wish to change your plans we can write a letter of medical recommendation to avoid travel for you if you wish.
